How to rename your active network name in Windows 10

In the previous versions of Windows, it was quite easy to change the network name but it may be quite confusing to modify the network name on your Windows 10 PC. If you are using Windows 10 and want to rename your network name, you may do it by using Registry Editor and Local Security Policy. Let’s learn how to do that.

To change the active network name with Registry Editor

You may easily modify the network name in your Windows 10 PC by following the below given steps:

  • Press “Windows Key + R”, type “regedit” and click “OK” to open Registry Editor
  • Follow the below given path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles
  • Now go through all subkeys under the Profiles key until you locate the key with that has “ProfileName” set as the name of your network.
  • In the right side pane, double click the “ProfileName” in order to change its value.
  • From here, you may change the Value data to the desired name of your network.

  • After completing the above given steps, close “Registry Editor.”
  • Restart your computer or to sign out and sign in again to apply the changes.

To change the active network name with Security Policy Editor

If you don’t want to edit registry, you may also change the network name using Security Policy Editor. Follow the below given steps to do that:

  • Press “Windows Key + R”, type “secpol.msc” and press “Enter” to run it.
  • In Local Security Policy window, click “Network List Manager Policies” in the left pane.
  • In the right side pane, double click on the network name that you want to change.
  • In the Properties windows under the “Name” section make sure that Name is chosen.
  • Now in the input field enter the name that you want to set for your network connection.

  • Click “Apply” and then “OK” to save the changes.
  • Restart your computer or to sign out and sign in again to apply the changes.
